The 53rd NAACP Image Awards were announced last week in a virtual event on NAACP’s Instagram channel. We were ecstatic to find out that Black History Mini Docs’ very own executive producer Neema Barnette was nominated for Best Director in comedy series (Harlem).  The hit series from Amazon Prime, created and executive produced by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip) and stars actresses Meagan Good, Grace Byers, Shoniqua Shandai, and Jerrie Johnson.

The website Rotten Tomatoes, give the Harlem series' first season a 95% approval rating some critics saying it is in someways better than the new version of Sex in the City (LA Times). The series also features amazing supporting cast that include Whoopi Goldberg and Jasmine Guy.

We asked Neema about her nomination and this is what she had to say: “To be honored by my people for what I love to do and for a show about the Harlem community I grew up in and still live in surpasses my every dream. Working with such a Stella cast and crew and with scripts written with a consciousness of self love made my job easy. I’m blessed to be a part of the “Harlem” family.”

The NAACP Image Awards highlight the achievements of people of color, and this year's list featured 83 categories for TV and streaming, recordings, motion pictures, literary, directing, writing, podcasts and documentaries. See the full list here. Hosted by black-ish star Anthony Anderson, the 2022 NAACP Image Awards will air (with no live audience due to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic precautions) Feb. 26 on BET.
